On April 5, 2024, in California City, California, a production version of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N was put through its paces as part of its preparation for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This event, a notable competition that will celebrate its 102nd iteration on June 23, 2024, is set to feature Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N among its contenders. This year, Hyundai is entering two IONIQ 5 N cars, each boasting 641 horsepower, aiming to set a new record in the Electric Production SUV/Crossover category, as part of their larger four-car lineup.
Till Wartenberg, leading Hyundai’s N Brand and Motorsport division, expressed confidence in returning to Pikes Peak with a competitive edge, courtesy of the IONIQ 5 N. He highlighted Hyundai’s longstanding tradition of testing and validating its emerging technologies and product innovations at Pikes Peak, a practice dating back to 1992. The IONIQ 5 N, according to Wartenberg, epitomizes Hyundai’s ambition to push the envelope with high-performance electric vehicles, offering consumers a glimpse into the capabilities of their production models.
Piloting the IONIQ 5 N vehicles in their quest for the record are Paul Dallenbach and Ron Zaras. Dallenbach, a seasoned competitor with eleven Pikes Peak victories and a record-setting run in 1993, is joined by Zaras, a newcomer to Pikes Peak and the latest addition to the team. Zaras, known for his work as a media personality and former executive at Hoonigan, brings his enthusiasm for motorsports to the forefront as he prepares for his debut at the challenging event.
Zaras shared his long-held fascination with the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, an event he aspired to compete in since watching the iconic film “Climb Dance.” For Zaras, participating in the race with Hyundai’s support and in the IONIQ 5 N is a fulfillment of a dream, marking his transition from a fan to a competitor.
Moreover, Hyundai is set to introduce a specially modified IONIQ 5 N for competition at Pikes Peak before its appearance at the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring on May 30. This variant of the IONIQ 5 N will be driven by Dani Sordo and Robin Shute, with Shute being a four-time winner and “King of the Mountain” at Pikes Peak and Sordo a Spanish driver competing in the World Rally Championship for Hyundai Motorsport.
The choice to target the Pikes Peak Electric Production SUV/Crossover record with the IONIQ 5 N stems from its proven performance capabilities, which align with Hyundai’s N performance vehicles. The IONIQ 5 N has undergone extensive testing under extreme conditions, including development and tuning at the Nürburgring Nordschleife to enhance its racetrack performance. It benefits from a suite of advanced technologies, including structural improvements, rally-inspired integrated drive axles, enhanced thermal management, N-tuned brakes, and leading regenerative braking capabilities.
Adjustments to the IONIQ 5 N for Pikes Peak compliance were minimal, focusing primarily on safety enhancements such as the installation of a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, Sabelt six-point HANS compatible seat belts, a roll cage, and a fire suppression system. The rear seats were removed to accommodate these updates. Other than these changes, the IONIQ 5 N remains as designed for consumer use. In anticipation of future events, the vehicle’s red paint will be replaced with a new, distinctive Hyundai N livery.
